Benefits of a Battery Electric Vehicle (BEV)

Zero CO2 emissions

Driving an electric vehicle reduces both direct and lifecycle emissions from vehicle production.

No petrol costs

By not using traditional fuels, you’ll save money.

A smooth driving experience

With fewer moving parts and reduced engine noise, expect a calmer commute in your new EV.

Low to zero road tax

Thanks to reduced emissions, running costs will be cheaper.

Government grants and incentives

With the government keen to meet agreed emissions targets, financial assistance is available to help you make the switch.

No more range anxiety

Some EV cars deliver over 250 miles fully charged, which is sure to soothe any range anxiety you might have.

Electric Car Charging

There are electric car charging stations across the UK. Questions about the cost of charging, and how long it takes to charge an electric car are common and answers depend on the types of charger your car has. To find out everything you need to know about charging then visit our charging page.

Electric car range

The range you can expect to get from your electric vehicle battery may change depending on the season, as cold weather requires higher energy use in order to heat the battery coolant, and to maintain a comfortable temperature inside the vehicle.

According to insurance aggregator NimbleFins, who ran a test on several EV models available in the UK, the average electric car range is 193 miles.

Frequently asked questions

How much does it cost to charge an electric car?

According to leading electric vehicle charging provider PodPoint, the average domestic electricity rate is about 14p per kWh. This equates to around £11.20 for an electric car with 80kW engine.

How long does it take to charge an electric car?

You can calculate the time it takes to charge an electric car by dividing the battery size by the rate of charge. The time it takes to charge an electric car depends on a number of variables including the make, model, battery size and type of charger. Usually the larger the battery capacity of the car, the longer it takes to charge.

How do electric cars work?

Hybrid cars use both electric and combustion motors. Pure hybrids charge automatically through a combination of regenerative braking and an internal combustion engine, while plug-in hybrids (PHEVs) can be charged by plugging them in. A fully electric vehicle only has an electric motor and does not use traditional fuels, and will only charge up when it’s plugged in.

Are all electric cars automatic?

Fully electric cars do not have a manual gearbox meaning they are almost always automatic due to their single-speed transmission. However, with hybrid electric vehicles manual gearboxes are available.

Are electric car charging stations free?

Costs will vary depending on the provider. Many of the electric car charging stations across the UK are free. Find out more information on electric car charging.

Can you charge an electric car without a driveway?

You can charge your car with the public charging network which now has over 30,000 public chargers in over 11,000 locations. There are now more charging points in the UK than petrol stations. Find out more about electric car charging.

Can electric cars run on petrol?

BEV cars (Battery Electric Vehicles) are electric only. Plug-in hybrid, self-charging-hybrid and mild hybrid cars all run on a combination of combustion engines and electric motors. This means they can be powered by battery or fuel such as petrol.
